IRDAI 2027 Seller Attribution Deadline for Insurers

From 1 January 2027, every intermediated policy must carry the name and functional identity of the individual salesperson.

Four Months Until Seller Attribution Becomes a Filing Obligation

The IRDAI (Insurance Intermediaries) (Amendment) Regulations 2026, notified on 30 July 2026, require the name and functional identity of the individual salesperson — broker qualified person, POSP, designated person, authorised verifier — on the proposal form and the policy document for every intermediated sale.

Seller-level attribution stops being a management report and becomes a filing obligation, across the entire intermediated book.

Where attribution actually breaks

Most insurers can produce a seller name. The obligation is to produce it consistently, and to reconstruct it on demand years later. Follow one rupee of commission through the four systems it currently passes between.

The sale is recorded

The policy admin system captures the transaction and the selling entity — often the corporate agent or the branch, not the individual who sold it.

This is where the chain breaks

The payout is adjusted

Splits across a shared bancassurance counter, an aggregator lead and a servicing agent are resolved by hand, in spreadsheets, outside the system of record. The individual attribution that the filing requires is created here — and is not written back.

Finance reconciles

Totals are agreed at channel and product level. Nothing at this step needs the individual seller, so nothing at this step preserves them.

The return is filed

The Expenses of Management return is certified by the statutory auditor and filed within 45 days of year-end, against a board-approved policy. From FY2026-27 there is no forbearance window behind it.

Three questions worth asking internally

Can you name the individual seller on every intermediated policy issued last quarter — without a manual exercise? If the answer involves a reconciliation, it is not yet a filing-grade record.
If IRDAI asked you to reconstruct one payout from three years ago, how long would it take? The December 2025 penalty order turned on how payments were classified, not on what rate was paid.
When an agent leaves, how long before their downline is re-parented and their orphaned renewals reassigned?Roughly seven lakh agents were terminated industry-wide in a single year. Each one is an attribution event with money attached.
